La Cense Montana, an 88,000 acre ranch specializing in premium recreational quarter horses trained by natural horsemanship methods, has chosen Wagner Design of Ann Arbor as its agency of record. The goal is to reach an upscale market of recreational riders who are seeking not just to buy a horse, but to forge a meaningful partnership. With that in mind, Wagner Design, working with copywriter Susan Wilkinson, developed the concept of, ‘A kindred spirit, a lifelong bond’.
According to La Cense Marketing Manager, Beth Stefani, “We chose Wagner Design based on our past experience with the firm, their creativity, and their high standards for quality.” The fact that Creative Director Jill Wagner has a passion for horses was also a plus. Stefani further explained that, for this particular package, “an understanding of what our client is looking for – the dream of a perfect partnership – is more important than a deep technical knowledge of horses. This creative team gets it.”
La Cense Montana is the only ranch in the United States endorsed by Pat Parelli to sell registered quarter horses that are educated under the Parelli method of Natural Horse•man•ship. Working with the horses’ natural behavior and temperament, La Cense trainers take a positive and respectful approach that builds trust and encourages the best performance. Equal time and care is taken with making a harmonious match between horse and rider.

Wagner Design has completed the first of several direct marketing projects for the University of Michigan Medical School. The ongoing campaign is directed to potential students across the country as they go through the process of choosing a medical school. Jill Wagner of Wagner Design serves as creative director/art director; freelance writer, Toni Voss, has been tapped to provide concept work, and copy writing.
To kick off the campaign, a brochure which asks, “What kind of doctor will you be?” will be mailed to prospective students. The piece features student-authored essays that describe the impact of the Medical School’s curriculum and faculty on their learning experience and career aspirations.
A second brochure entitled,“Where do you go from here?” follows the career paths of eight U-M Medical School graduates as a way of demonstrating the School’s efforts in preparing their students for residency and for future career development. The brochure spotlights four nationally known physicians: Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Medical Correspondent; Dr. Benjamin Carson, a world renowned brain surgeon at Johns Hopkins; Dr. Samuel Broder, former head of the National Cancer Institute and the leader of the Celera Genomics team that broke the human gene code; and Dr. Nancy Ascher, chairman of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ committee on organ transplantation.
Students who have been accepted to the University’s medical school but who have not yet made a final decision will receive several digital e-vites encouraging them to to participate in online chat sessions with Admissions representatives and students, as well as to visit the U-M for a special weekend program in the spring.
Since its inception, the University of Michigan Medical School has been recognized as a site that combines state-of-the-art research activities, innovative medical education and pioneering clinical care. The first professional school at the University of Michigan, the Medical School admitted its first class of 91 students in 1850 and has awarded almost 18,000 M.D. degrees in the past 150 years, as well as educating thousands of residents and biomedical researchers. The School is currently ranked among the top 10 medical schools in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Rockport Publishing, an art and graphic design publisher, has chosen a direct mail piece designed by Ann Arbor-based graphic design company, Wagner Design, for its new book, 1000 Graphic Elements. “With today’s ever-expanding repertoire of finishing techniques, materials, and processes, there are plenty of excuses to innovate. Some might argue that ‘everything’s been done before,’ but here are 1,000 pieces of work that beg to differ.” One thousand well-designed print communications pieces from around the world are highlighted in the book.
Wagner Design contributed an innovative, square direct mail piece for the publication. Created for ProQuest Information and Learning, the mailer was sent to Special Library Association attendees to direct them to the ProQuest booth.
