I’ve always seen photography in two ways: in terms of nostalgia or in terms of art. In nostalgic photography, a piece of reality is captured that records a personal event. In artful photography, a reality is captured in a far off land that you can experience for the first time. Or, maybe it’s an emotion rather than a landscape. But either way, I’ve always thought of photography as “non-fiction.” I’ve believed that what I was seeing really happened. Perhaps, I’m too trusting. It appears photography may be moving in another direction.
The women at Wagner Design Associates, a graphic design firm in Ann Arbor, are no strangers to manipulating photographs. We often merge multiple images, outline people and/or objects to place into a different background, change colors of objects, and that sort of thing, for artful purposes. I recently read an article about altering photography in Step Inside Design that showcased different purposes for altering photographs. Not for the sake of design, but for the sake of recreating nostalgia. I’m not just talking about erasing a blemish or a few wrinkles, either, although people are paying for this service. But, now you can also have people inserted into photos that couldn’t make it to the event, or were the one behind the camera, or simply had not been born yet when the photo was taken.
So, the next time you’re looking at photos of you’re cousin’s wedding that you had to miss, don’t be surprised if you find that somehow you made into the album. Maybe you can be in two places at once.

Two local creative companies have collaborated on a print ad designed to attract new business to the Ann Arbor Region for a special Super Bowl XL publication.
Jill Wagner of the Ann Arbor advertising firm,Wagner Design, and Chris Hippler of Capital Letters LLC have created a dynamic four-page ad that will appear in a Super Bowl edition of Visit Detroit, a quarterly publication of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Through company profiles, quotes, and statistics the Ann Arbor Region is positioned as a business climate where businesses don’t just grow, they thrive. All aspects of business in the region are covered: big and small, established and emerging, high tech and health care.

Wagner Design has completed the first of several direct marketing projects for the University of Michigan Medical School. The ongoing campaign is directed to potential students across the country as they go through the process of choosing a medical school. Jill Wagner of Wagner Design serves as creative director/art director; freelance writer, Toni Voss, has been tapped to provide concept work, and copy writing.
To kick off the campaign, a brochure which asks, “What kind of doctor will you be?” will be mailed to prospective students. The piece features student-authored essays that describe the impact of the Medical School’s curriculum and faculty on their learning experience and career aspirations.
A second brochure entitled,“Where do you go from here?” follows the career paths of eight U-M Medical School graduates as a way of demonstrating the School’s efforts in preparing their students for residency and for future career development. The brochure spotlights four nationally known physicians: Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Medical Correspondent; Dr. Benjamin Carson, a world renowned brain surgeon at Johns Hopkins; Dr. Samuel Broder, former head of the National Cancer Institute and the leader of the Celera Genomics team that broke the human gene code; and Dr. Nancy Ascher, chairman of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ committee on organ transplantation.
Students who have been accepted to the University’s medical school but who have not yet made a final decision will receive several digital e-vites encouraging them to to participate in online chat sessions with Admissions representatives and students, as well as to visit the U-M for a special weekend program in the spring.
Since its inception, the University of Michigan Medical School has been recognized as a site that combines state-of-the-art research activities, innovative medical education and pioneering clinical care. The first professional school at the University of Michigan, the Medical School admitted its first class of 91 students in 1850 and has awarded almost 18,000 M.D. degrees in the past 150 years, as well as educating thousands of residents and biomedical researchers. The School is currently ranked among the top 10 medical schools in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.
